How to spend the best foodie 24 hours in Kochi
We were told by many people that Kerala is the place to go for relaxing, sunbathing, surfing, eating - basically for a holiday! We started our Kerala holiday in Kochi, and although we didn't stay long, we made the absolute most of the incredible fresh seafood on offer. This post will share the best way to explore Kochi... through food!

How to get there
We took a semi-sleeper bus (emphasis on the semi) from Mysore which took us ~7 hours to reach Cochin. We struggled to find busses on RedBus so booked our trip through Sunny Travel agents in Hampi which took us via Mysore for 24 hours (check our our guide here). Both busses were government run, meaning pick-up and drop-off are at main bus stations. The total journey (Hampi to Mysore, Mysore to Kochi) cost Rs. 1,250 each (~£13).
Where to Stay
Zostel - This was our first Zostel (you'll probably run into one along your trip) and it was alright... Standard dorm rooms, chill-out area upstairs, free drinking water and centrally located. We say it's only alright as we've stayed in hostels which feel a lot more personal, you could definitely tell this was a chain. £6/ night so very affordable, click here to book (cash only).
Old Fishing Nets
The Old Fishing Nets are a must see sight, but an even better thing to do is to eat here! Head down to the sea front and explore all the fishmongers selling incredible fresh fish. Once you've found your favourite seller and haggled the best deal for a plate, you then choose your fish (sounds a bit backwards, but that's how they do it...)
They'll then take you round the back of their stall and cook it up for you with your choice of spices and flavouring. Two large fish and 10 prawns cost us Rs. 750 + Rs. 200 to cook it up (~£10)! We made friends with a Thai lady eating there too who had incredible langoustine and kindly gave us a couple with her homemade Thai dipping sauce. INSANE experience!
Breakfast before the bus to Alleppey
Alice Delices - A small french bakery you wouldn't expect to find in a tiny fishing village in India! The food here is delicious and the first western food we'd had in a long while. Alice and Julien have 15 years experience in France, and you can tell from the way they bake! Usually western food is pretty expensive, but this place is super affordable and you get so much in the breakfast set. Unfortunately Julien had a bit of an accident with his final batch of croissants and burnt them, but I had to try one anyway. They had so much more on offer and he wanted to substitute them for a different delicious bake but they were going to go to waste and a little burntness never hurt anybody and they were DELICIOUS! Perfect to fuel your journey to Alleppey!
We hope you enjoy exploring Fort Kochi through food as much as we did. We were so excited to get to Varkala as everyone had told us this was the place to be in India (it is) that we rushed through Kochi and Alleppey, but we can't wait to return and spend a few days indulging in the delights!
