Where to stay, eat and what to do (other than visiting the Taj Mahal)

The main reason you're visiting Agra is probably to see the Taj Mahal - read our guide to visiting the Taj Mahal. This blog post will share the best place to stay, our favourite food spot, and also another must see sight in Agra!

Where to Stay: Joey's Hostel

100% stay here if you’re a backpacker, and even if you’re not. There is a million-dollar view from the terrace, it’s very affordable, and it’s only a 4-minute walk from the East gate! We also stayed at a Joey's Hostel in Delhi which was in a great location for sightseeing! - check out our Guide to  Sightseeing in Delhi here.

Where to Eat: Yash's Cafe

A stone's throw away from Joey's, Yash Cafe offers one of the best thalis we had in India. There's a real family vibe in the restaurant. The manager took our order, went off and made it all from scratch, and then sat down with us for a lovely chat!

Sightseeing: The Agra Fort

Most people visit the Taj Mahal and then get out of Agra as quickly as possible. We stayed an extra day and visited the The Agra Fort, and with the Taj Mahal overshadowing it, people are likely to miss out on this great location!

Built between 1565 and 1573, the Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a clear day you can get panoramic views of the Taj Mahal 3km away. It's of great historical significance being the site of many events in the Mughal Empire, so definitely worth a visit for history buffs, photo fanatics, and general experience seekers!

You'll probably be hounded by "guides" telling you there's 16 different palaces inside and you need to have a guide... don't listen to them, it took us an hour to go round twice and you can listen to other people's guides/ ask staff questions. It's open all days of the week, sunrise to sunset, and costs Rs.550 for tourists and Rs.40 for locals.

There's so much more to Agra that we didn't have time to explore, and although it's a must see sight, there's 100% more than just the Taj Mahal! Let us know if you get the chance to visit any of these places, and what you thought!
