The Amber Fort and Viewpoint

Guide to the Amber Fort and Viewpoint

The Amber Fort is at the top of everyone's list when it comes to Jaipur sightseeing (as it should be) but one of the best ways to see the Amber Fort is from above! You'll also be able to snap the very famous tower picture... if you're brave enough! Read on to find out how to get there.

Save this on Pinterest to read it later↡

The Amber Fort

Located about a 20 minute drive from the center of Jaipur, the Amber Fort is a must see sight for all tourists, which means you'll want to get there as early as possible to avoid the huge crowds! It's open from 8am to 5.30pm, and you can expect to pay around Rs.850 for a taxi there.

Entry costs Rs.500 for foreigners and Rs.100 for locals (nighttime entry is 6.30pm-9.15pm and is Rs.100 for all). Prepare yourself to see lots of tourists riding elephants up the long hill to the gate. We strongly advise against this as it's widely known that the elephants aren't treated well at all! Inside you'll find beautiful Hindu Islamic fusion architecture. Take your time to wander round this immense fort, especially if you arrive early with little crowds, it is just breath-taking!

The Viewpoint

The first picture below was taken inside the fort just as you enter (to give you a better idea as to where it's located). You'll likely be dropped by your taxi by some samosa stands, if you're facing the stands, the entrance to the stairs up to the viewpoint is to your right, tucked away behind a yellowish building (you'll feel like you're walking into bushes, just roll with it). Now, prepare yourself for a VERY sweaty and steep plod to the top! The second picture is the view of the fort you'll get half way up the stairs.

Once you're at the top you'll have a beautiful breeze and panoramic views of the fort and surrounding Jaipur towns. The left pagoda is where you'll snap the famous insta pic. We precariously balanced our camera on the wall, put a long timer on, and sprinted to strike a pose! Behind the right pagoda you'll find a podium for more fabulous pictures. Be warned however, if it gets really breezy some of these pictures can be dangerous, so please take care!

Our biggest tip of all would be to go inside the fort before you go to the viewpoint! We spent more time up here than we did in the fort, just taking in the view and enjoying the breeze (and catching our breath from the thousands of steps). We made this mistake, and even though we were still in the fort early, it was a little busier than we had hoped! So, take in the history and then take in the scenery!
